The 2020 Hack: What Happened & What Changed
September 2020: Hackers gained access to KuCoin’s hot wallet private keys and drained ~$285 million worth of BTC, ETH, ERC-20 tokens, and other assets.
KuCoin’s Response: They froze withdrawals within hours, worked with blockchain analytics firms to track funds, and coordinated with other exchanges to freeze stolen tokens. Approximately 84% of funds were recovered. The remaining 16% was covered by KuCoin’s insurance fund.
Result: All affected users were fully reimbursed. Zero user losses. KuCoin then rebuilt their entire security infrastructure with multi-sig cold wallets and new key management systems.
