🔒 WALLET SETUP GUIDE — 2026
How to Set Up a Crypto Wallet
Complete Step-by-Step Guide 2026
Setting up a crypto wallet takes 5–30 minutes. This guide covers both software wallets (free, beginner-friendly) and hardware wallets (maximum security for larger holdings).
Option A: Set Up a Software Wallet (Free, 5 min)
Best for: small amounts, DeFi, everyday transactions. Examples: MetaMask (Ethereum/EVM), Trust Wallet (multi-chain), Phantom (Solana).
1
Download from Official Source Only
Go to metamask.io or trustwallet.com directly — never search “MetaMask download” on Google as fake sites steal funds. Install the browser extension or mobile app.
2
Create a New Wallet
Open the app → “Create a new wallet” → Set a strong password (this is your device password, not your seed phrase).
3
Write Down Your Seed Phrase — CRITICAL
You’ll be shown 12 words. Write these on paper with a pen. Never photograph, screenshot, or type them anywhere digital. This is the only backup for your wallet — if you lose it, your funds are gone forever.
4
Verify Your Seed Phrase
The app will ask you to re-enter your seed phrase in order to confirm you wrote it down. Complete this step carefully.
5
Store Your Seed Phrase Safely
Put the paper in a sealed envelope, store it at home in a safe place. Some people make 2 copies and store them in separate locations. Never store digitally.
Option B: Set Up a Ledger Hardware Wallet (15–30 min)
Best for: holdings over $500, long-term storage, maximum security. Your private keys never leave the device.
1
Buy from Ledger Official Store Only
Order from shop.ledger.com only — never from Amazon, eBay, or third parties. A tampered device can steal your funds. Check the box seal on arrival.
2
Download Ledger Live
Go to ledger.com/ledger-live and download the official app for your computer or phone. This is the control panel for your Ledger device.
3
Connect Your Device & Initialize
Connect via USB-C. In Ledger Live → “Set up a new Ledger”. The device screen will guide you through creating a new wallet and generating your PIN.
4
Write Down Your 24-Word Seed Phrase
Ledger devices show you 24 words (more secure than 12). Write each word on the supplied Recovery Sheet in order. Never enter these words into any computer or phone.
5
Install Coin Apps & Receive Crypto
In Ledger Live → Manager → Install the apps for coins you want (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Each coin needs its own app. Then use “Receive” to get your wallet addresses.
🚨 Never Do These Things
- Never enter your seed phrase on any website (this is always a scam)
- Never store your seed phrase in Google Drive, Notes, or any cloud service
- Never buy hardware wallets from third-party sellers (Amazon, eBay, etc.)
- Never share your seed phrase or private key with “support agents”
- Never install wallet apps from unofficial app stores or links
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a seed phrase?
12–24 words that are the master backup of your wallet. Anyone with these words controls your funds. Write on paper, store safely offline, never share with anyone.
Can I lose my crypto if I lose my Ledger?
No — if you have your seed phrase, buy a new Ledger and restore with those words. All funds will reappear. The device stores the key; the seed phrase is the true backup.
Which wallet is best for beginners?
Trust Wallet for free (mobile, multi-chain). Ledger Nano S Plus for hardware security at $79. Tangem card wallet if you want no seed phrase to manage.
